Sapa is not only famous for its scenic mountains and vibrant hill tribe culture but also for its delicious local cuisine. Nestled in the highlands of Northern Vietnam, this charming town offers a range of unique dishes that reflect the flavors of the ethnic minority groups living here, such as the Hmong, Dao, and Tay people.
1. Thang Co – The Highland Specialty
A traditional dish of the Hmong people, Thang Co is a hearty stew made with horse meat, offal, and local herbs. It may be an acquired taste for some, but it’s an authentic culinary experience.
📍 Best tried at Sapa local markets or traditional restaurants in Ta Phin.
2. Grilled Dishes – Street Food Vibes
At night, Sapa’s streets turn into a haven for grilled food lovers. You’ll find skewered meats, tofu, mushrooms, and even eggs cooked over open flames. Marinated with herbs from the region, they’re warm, smoky, and comforting in the cool mountain air.
📍 Head to Sapa Night Market or around Sapa Square.
3. Salmon Hotpot – A Local Surprise
Thanks to its cool climate, Sapa is one of the few places in Vietnam where salmon is farmed. The Sapa salmon hotpot is light, aromatic, and loaded with vegetables and local herbs.
📍 Try it at Song Nhi Restaurant or Anh Dung Salmon Hotpot.
4. Corn Wine – The Local Spirit
Corn wine is a traditional rice wine made by the Hmong and Dao people. It’s often served during special events or when welcoming guests. A small sip offers a glimpse into the warm hospitality of the highlanders.
📍 Found in ethnic villages like Ta Van or on our Sapa Trekking Tour.
5. Bamboo Sticky Rice (Com Lam)
Sticky rice cooked inside bamboo tubes, Com Lam is a convenient and flavorful snack. It pairs well with grilled pork or sesame salt.
📍 Available in local stalls and village markets during our 1 Day Sapa Motorbike Tour.
6. Hmong-style Pancake (Banh Cuon Sapa)
Different from typical Vietnamese Banh Cuon, this version includes minced pork, mushroom, and is topped with crispy shallots and herbs. Served hot with a tangy fish sauce.
📍 Try Banh Cuon Co Lan near Sapa Church.
